How does web hosting work?

So i am wonder how web hosting works because i want to start my own business in hosting plus a couple of others that pertain to hosting as well. So if anybody can give me the name of a book or something to point me in the right direction that would be great. Also it would help if i could get a list of equipment i am going to need. thanks a bunch
